TRUCK DRIVING
One of the Fastest Growing Occupations in the Country!
Are you looking for a job where there is a tremendous amount of growth potential? Are you looking for employment that will be steady and stable? Well, then you ought to consider a career in truck driving, my friend. Because, according to recently released Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) information, truck driving is expected to be one of the fastest growing occupations in the country over the next decade. Yes, truck driving!
According to BLS projections, truck driving jobs are expected to increase in number by 18% between now and the year 2010. That translates into approximately 600,000 new trucking jobs which will need to be filled in the next six years. (Those would be on top of the approximately 3.2 million trucking jobs which are currently filled).
Besides the projected job growth rates, there will also be the usual need for new truckers to replace truckers who retire, transfer to another area of their company, or leave trucking for some other reason.
By the way, of the current 3.2 million trucking jobs, 430,000 of those are drivers/sales workers, while the remaining 2.8 million are truck drivers. The truck transportation industry employs about one-fourth of all truck drivers. Another one-fourth work for companies engaged in wholesale or retail trade. The remaining truck drivers and drivers/sales workers are spread across many different industries, including manufacturing and construction.
Of course, with the increased need for truck drivers, salaries for truck driving jobs should increase steadily over the next decade, as well. In 2002, the average median earnings for heavy truck and tractor trailer drivers were approximately $16 an hour. Simple laws of supply and demand dictate that when there is a need for a worker in a particular industry, salaries go up to attract workers to that industry. So, truck drivers are in demand right now. And the demand for truck drivers will grow steadily between now and 2010.
So, if you’re thinking about a career where you will earn great pay, and have a stable work environment…..consider truck driving as a career. Oh, and you get to see this great land of ours, as well. Consider that a bonus.
